A minute and a half into overtime in the last game of the Winter Carnival Girl's Hockey Tournament, Homer Hockey Association's 19 and under Glacier Girls scored on the Homer Divas womens' team. The goal made the girls the second place team of the fifth annual tournament, which was held at the Kevin Bell Arena last weekend and featured all of Alaska's U-19 girls teams. The Anchorage Comets took first place.

Homer Coach Tomie CarlinSchauer had nothing but praise for the Glacier Girls, who he said played the best they had all year.

"They just played hard, fast, strong, smart," he said.

"They're growing quickly. Where they've come from a month ago: unbelievable."

Homer girls scored 11 goals in four games, all of which CarlinSchauer said were good goals on good plays. Hannah LaRue and Caroline DeCreeft each scored multiple times. First-year player Alecia Stafford also scored, as did Ivy Bloom.

Team manager Blake LaRue commented on strong play from the defense, and agreed that the girls are improving greatly.

The girls will play four games in Anchorage the first weekend in March and will likely face the Divas sometime soon.

"Every game with the women this year has been a fun battle," CarlinSchauer said, and the last game was no different.

He said the teams played with a lot of heart and were simply fun to watch.

"We could not have had a better weekend. This type of play this weekend is going to turn into victories," CarlinSchauer said.
