Russell K. Griffith, 72, died Feb. 12, 2009, at South Peninsula Hospital with his wife by his side after a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Griffith.
Per Russell's request, no formal services will be held.
Dr. Griffith was born July 14, 1936, in Pittsburgh, Penn. He became a resident of Homer in 2000. Russell attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y., Ohio Wesleyan University, and earned his Ph.D. in chemistry and physics from Akron University. He married in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in 1959. While in the U.S. Air Force he was stationed at Wright Patterson in Dayton, Ohio, and then continued his research in chemistry at Standard Oil of Ohio in Warrensville Heights, Ohio. He later moved to Bucks Harbor, Maine.
