Nellie Lee McDaniel




April 9, 1929-Jan. 29, 2009

Homer resident Nellie McDaniel, 79, died Jan. 29, 2009, at Providence Hospital, Anchorage. A celebration of lie is at 3 p.m. Feb. 21, 2009, at Down East Saloon in Homer.

Nellie was born April 9, 1929, in East Liverpool, Ohio, to Elwood T. Palmer and Dorothy M. Beggs Palmer. She graduated from East Liverpool High School in Ohio.

Nellie came to Homer in 1990 with her husband, W.E. "Bill" McDaniel, where she and her husband Bill, with their hearts of gold, volunteered their time and cooking skills to various organizations, including American Legion Posts 16, 18, 20, 28, 33 and 57; the American Legion Boys and Girls State; Marine Corps League; 40/8; the Moose, Eagles and Elks; national veterans wheelchair games; Share the Spirit, and other fund-raising events.

Nellie is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, W.E. "Bill" McDaniel; children and spouses Lynne M. Mumford Snowball, (Wayne) Karen S. Mumford Esker (Donald), Jocelyn A. Mumford Allen; sons Nelson E. McDaniel and William McDaniel; grandchildren Angela Snowball Portsmith, Stanley Portsmith, Jonathen Snowball, Colleen E. Esker Tedders, Jason Esker, Clayton Allen, Corey Field and Taylor Field; great-grandchildren Bradley Portsmith, Dylan Portsmith, Brianna T. Schaefer, Chelsea Rose Tedders and Nicholas P. Tedders; sisters Donna J. Palmer, Kay Lynn Palmer Griffith (William); many nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Elwood and Dorthy Palmer; brothers Richard E. Palmer and Charles D. Palmer, and first husband Joseph Mumford.

Nellie was cremated at Witzleben Legacy Funeral Home in Anchorage. Her ashes will be spread in Homer and East Liverpool, Ohio, where a memorial service will be held in late spring.
