Homer takes second place in the Anchorage Math Counts competition

Staff report

Homer eighth-graders Aidan Coyle, Ethan Kizzia, Hope Hudson and Sam Reinert swept to second place in the Anchorage Math Counts competition Saturday. Sam Reinert also scored sixth place as an individual competitor.

"It was remarkable," said Sara Reinert, one of the team coaches and a math professor at Kachemak Bay Campus, Kenai Peninsula College-University of Alaska Anchorage.

The students are in Homer Middle School math instructor Dan Calhoun's advanced math class. An HMS team of seventh-graders attended in an unofficial capacity: John Walsworth, Nahoa Jette, Alfonso Sitenga and Adella Sundmark.

"They came in as advanced math students because of the teachers they had in elementary school and the tremendous math support they had from teachers and their parents," Reinert said.
