Stage set for Snow Rondi weekend

Here comes the sun. The days are getting longer, and we are getting more and more light as time passes. Spring cleaning is right around the corner. Football season is done and fishing season is on its way. Heading back from Anchorage, I noticed quite a few people enjoying our great outdoors — snowmachining, cross country skiing, snow boarding and ice fishing. It is great to see people loving the land. Snow Rondi starts today in Anchor Point. We hope to see a lot of you our way to enjoy the festivities. Have a safe weekend. Get out and enjoy what life has to offer.

The Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce has been working very hard to make this year’s Snow Rondi a fun event for all ages. This is the chamber’s biggest event of the year, and a lot of extra time goes into planning a memorable event for all. Don’t miss it.

The chamber also has been busy mailing out correspondence to potential tourists. Approximately 50 envelopes have been addressed, stuffed and postage applied just in the past couple weeks. This is ongoing all year, but it seems to be really picking up. If you are a chamber member and want to advertise in these packets please get your rack cards or flyers to the chamber office. The chamber has spent $1,000 on a booth in Sullivan Arena in Anchorage for the Sportsman Show this year. Call the chamber if you are interested in working the booth for a few hours or a day. Door prizes also are needed. This event has been very successful in previous years and is a superb opportunity for Anchor Point businesses to represent themselves

Beta Sigma Phi will hold a bake sale to raise money for its annual scholarship from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the chamber of commerce building. Lots of goodies will be available.

Anchor Point Senior Citizen Center thanks everyone who attended the prime rib fund-raiser dinner last week. There was a great turnout.

The center will have an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday. It also will have its Snow Rondi Bake Sale and Craft Fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Anyone wanting to rent space for the craft fair is asked to call the center at 235-7786 or Sue at 235-0583.

The center is collecting old bikes that need repairs. After repairs are made, the center will have a special day to give out bikes and helmets to children who need them. The day will include a bicycle safety course and refreshments. This is not exclusive to Anchor Point; it also includes Homer and Ninilchik. Anyone with an old bike to donate is asked to call Amy Cox at 235-7786.

Anchor Point Disaster Response Program and CERT, Community Emergency Response Team, training will begin March 6. If interested, contact Carolyn Roderick at 235-8405 or register online at www.kpvolunteers.org. Just click on the big green CERT button. The next disaster response meeting will be May 1; all volunteers are welcome.

There will be a search and rescue class Friday through Sunday at the Anchor Point post of the Alaska State Troopers. Don’t forget to sign up and pay the $25 fee.

Anchor Point Youth Committee: Youth are invited to let their voice be heard by signing up for the Youth Committee at The Warehouse store, Thurmond’s or the post office. The first meeting is planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the senior center.

Anchor Point Library is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.

VFW Post 10221 will have a barbecue starting at 4 p.m. Saturday. Karaoke will follow at 9 p.m. Sunday is the monthly fish fry from 4-6 p.m. All members and guests are welcome.
