Grab your hats, coats and gloves and head to Anchor Point for the Snow Rondi festivities this weekend. With the way the weather is going, you may not even need your gloves or hat. Bring the family for a weekend of fun. Snow Rondi begins tonight with an auction at the Anchor River Inn. Friday, there will be a spaghetti dinner at Chapman Elementary School from 6-8 p.m. Then, the action is over at the Anchor River Inn for bingo and the Ken Wardwell Pool Tournament. Both events start at 7 p.m. Saturday is filled with fun and games for all ages. I can’t think of any other place I would want to be than Anchor Point this weekend.
Chamber of Commerce
Don’t forget to buy your Snow Rondi button. This year’s design by Nykkole Poindexter is now on sale at many businesses and organizations around Anchor Point. Buttons are $2 each with a split the pot drawing to be held at the awards ceremony on Sunday.
The guest speaker at Wednesday’s luncheon will be Tom Clark, who will give an update on the water system. Also scheduled in March is the Homer Water and Soil Conservation District with a report on the Anchor River, and Ann and Don Bailey with a pictorial recap of their snowmachine adventures in remote Alaska.
The chamber is sponsoring a photo contest beginning now and ending on the Fourth of July. Winners will be announced and cash prizes awarded during Fourth of July celebrations. Pictures showing Anchor Point events, scenery and activities, which can be used on the chamber’s Web site and in advertisements and promotions, are wanted. All photos will become the property of Anchor Point chamber. Entry forms are available at the chamber office. The board of directors meets the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the chamber office. Meetings are open to the public. For more information, contact the chamber office at 235-2600.
Anchor Point Senior Center
Tonight’s dinner will be raspberry chicken and salmon cakes with a marvelous dessert and all the rest of the fine fixings. Cost for members is $5; cost for nonmembers is $7. There will be a Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, training following dinner. It will cover disaster preparedness, including 72-hour kits and interesting tips on how to help your home survive a disaster and avoid problems with prevention measures. There will be a craft and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The disaster response program also will have a table there to inform the community about disaster preparedness and upcoming events and classes.
The senior center will have a fund-raiser for Dawson Slaughter on March 11. Steve Chmielowiec will be the special guest volunteer cook that night. Prime rib is on the menu. There is a $15 charge for dinner, and there will be two seating times — 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Anchor Point Library
Storytime with an “In the Forest” theme is at 1 p.m. Saturday for kids of all ages. Raising the Reader storytime for preschoolers in conjunction with the Family Learning Center in Homer is every Friday at 1:30 p.m. The library has hired Elizabeth Balkus through the MASST (Mature Alaskans Seeking Skills Training) program to work in the library, so library hours have been increased. New hours starting immediately are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. February is amnesty month, so bring in any overdue books and you don’t have to pay a fine.
Chapman Elementary School
Congrats to Chapman’s girls’ volleyball team for taking second place in the small school volleyball tournament held at Ninilchik last weekend. Chapman’s site base committee will conduct a phone survey Monday to determine if there is an interest in a pre-kindergarten program. If interested in this program, please call the school at 235-8671. Melody Douglas from the district office will be at Chapman at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss budget issues. This is an open meeting. There will be a spaghetti feed from 6-8 p.m. Friday. Proceeds from this event will help the kids travel to the Alaska Native Heritage Center. The pinewood derby weigh-in is at 10 a.m. Saturday. The race will begin at 11 a.m. The dog show will be at 2 p.m. Sunday with all proceeds going to the Homer Animal Shelter.
VFW Post 10221
There will be no pool tournament Friday, but there will be karaoke at 9 p.m. Friday. Saturday, there will be a barbecue with a special event planned for 8 p.m. Members and guests are welcome. Sunday is the monthly fish fry.
