Americans fed up with political business as usual

John Fenske

Democrat? Republican?

The American people are getting a little testy. We are seeing a covey of seasoned politicians in flight from Washington D.C. What's going on?

John Fenske

I believe that what we are hearing is accurate: The American people are getting fed up with patrician politics. We have seen the extreme on both sides ignore the need to work together for change, placing their jobs before answering the hard questions, demanding compliance before cooperation and stopping any train before it leaves the station.

I don't blame any citizen from voicing their frustration with our representatives and their inability to put the country first and themselves second.

Is there a revolution coming? I think so. I don't think the American people want this bunch of crazies pursuing their personal power trip, led by the extremes of this world — those who want to set aside the Constitution and apply life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, to a select few. If we refuse to grant privilege to any of the people in our country, we will suffer having our privilege refused also.

I hear a lot of talk about Jefferson and the First Amendment, about treating political corporate bodies as human beings, and treating imprisoned human beings as non beings without rights. I see us privatizing our armies, turning health care into a corporate grab-bag and usurping the responsibility and rights of the individual with something called the Patriot Act.

We have seen the Republican Party (leadership) and the Democratic Party (leadership) give away our country's research and development under the guise of NAFTA, free trade, union control, price stabilization and cheap credit, cheap goods and a higher standard of living. Welcome to the real world of greed, corruption and self interest.

I just listened to J.D. Hayworth, an Arizona Republican, say that John McCain isn't hearing the American people. "They want more conservative government, not less," Hayworth said, adding "That is the way the game is played."

I believe it is time to quit playing games with America. I believe that Americans are tired of being thought of as game pieces to be manipulated and used.

I think that Americans are tired of political business as usual.

I believe that there is a wakeup call to Democrat and Republican extremists to put party politics aside and do the business of government.

Our founders were correct when they declared injustice in the beginning, "If we do not hang together, we will surely hang separately." I would paraphrase it slightly differently: If we don't take care of business, business will surely take care of us.

John Fenske is a longtime Homer resident and a lover of America and the protections and freedoms it provides.
