Homer claims DDF awards

Drew Cason, Brett Frazer and Colin Haughey, members of the UAA debate team, prepare arguments for a demonstration debate performed Friday. The team served as judges for the End of the Road Tourney at Homer High School Friday and Saturday.

The "End of the Road Tourney" drew some tough drama, debate and forensics competition Friday and Saturday. Teams from high schools in the central Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage and Chugiak, as well as Homer High School, spent Friday and Saturday in numerous events, with Homer claiming multiple awards.

The renowned University of Alaska Anchorage debate team set the stage Friday, with a demo debate on whether marriage should be abolished. Following the demo, they offered tips, answered questions and discussed debate's fine points before the high school students took over and the UAA team judged the various matches.

Following are results for the Homer participants:

Mime: Team of Kate Spence, Bailey Richards and Cheyenne DeLoach, third place.

Dramatic interpretation: Kate Spence, first place; Casey Parrett, second place; Amelia Tyrer, third place.

Humor: Kate Spence, first place; Lance Cowen, second place; Jacob Mayforth, tied for third place.

Duo interpretation: Team of Alder Fletcher and Trevor Waldorf, third place.

Duo acting: Team of John Hannan and Lance Cowen, second place.

Solo acting: Amelia Tyrer, tied for first place.

Expository: Theo Noomah, third place.

Readers' theater: Team of Ben Blue, Cheyenne DeLoach, Theo Noomah and Alder Bletcher, second place.

Lincoln-Douglas debate: Hailey Smith, third place.

Policy debate: Team of Bailey Richards and Ben Blue, second place.

Public forum debate: Team of Trevor Waldorf and Miles Weibe.
