While the Ms, may have lost to Palmer 61-38 on Feb. 19 and Colony 53-49 on Feb. 20, the story isn't all bad.

Against Colony the Ms were able to rally back hard in the fourth quarter, dropping 18 points and though the effort ultimately couldn't overcome the deficit in scoring from the first and third quarters, the Ms were able to keep spirits up and keep driving.

In both cases the Ms faced teams brimming with talented and experienced athletes that were able to consistently make shots, even when the Mariners could not.

Against Palmer, the Ms were down fast in the first period, 22-9 and struggled through the course of the rest of the game to get back on even ground. The closest they came was tying in scoring in the fourth quarter 13-13.

With Palmer blasting away from the free throw line at a rate of 82 percent, the Ms just couldn't keep up and that showed with Homer making just a third of its free throws.

Against Colony the Mariners clocked in 70 percent from the line, to Colony's 54 percent and the more even keeled score reflected the Ms' ability to make shots count, despite the loss.

If the Ms continue to work hard at practice they could have a shot at topping Kodiak away this weekend.

However, for most of the Mariners, sights are set on Skyview come March 4 and the regional tournament, where the Ms will take on the best in the region in a bid to make it into the state tournament in Anchorage.

The boys continue to hold seventh place in the conference with a record of 2-7 and 9-13 on the season.
