My-gosh, the right does indulge themselves in nightmare scenarios. Like how someone in a letter to the editor last week used the ending time of 2012 in Mayan eschatology to spring board into a rant about Obama being crushed in the 2012 election, whereupon, according to the writer, "he will launch a massive nuclear attack that will cause other nuclear nations to launch back at us, effectively bringing to an end all of mankind as we know it." His next sentence continues: "Obviously, I only say this because I, as all Americans, see his (Obama's) unadulterated hatred for this country."
Well, just what kind of tea has that poor Tea Party-type been sipping? Certainly it must have been laced with LSD. What a bad trip.
Against that dreadful and delusional backdrop, I'd really like to thank Katie Dawson, in her concern of country, for her thoughtful and well written letter last week. It was an arrow that shot true to the mark. I'll be sure to read the book she suggested: "The Age of Access." Also I'd like to extend my appreciation to John Fenske for his penetrating discernment and good old-fashioned American pragmatism that he offered up to us in last week's opinion piece. It was pure salt of the earth wisdom.
In "the market place of ideas" its voices like theirs that have currency.
To the Tea Party types I suggest they turn off Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and Sarah Palin. They're not good for mental health. I also suggest they rediscover the voice and spirit of William F. Buckley. He'd make a great takeoff point for them in becoming rational and actually conservative again.
To be sure, more than Sarah Palin needs to be hitting the books. I pray today's so-called conservatives find their way again, especially judging by the recent Texas IRS building terrorist attack by some Jihadist type of the American right. A violin must have been eerily playing in that man's head as he flew into the building.
