Girls come close to a win on Saturday

drop two against Kodiak

Ryan M. Long

The Lady Ms basketball team dropped two to a fireball Kodiak Lady Bears squad Feb. 26-27, but are looking forward to the Region competition, which starts today at Skyview, to finish the season on a positive note.

Though only the top three teams will go on to state from Regions, the event gives the Lady Ms a chance to post one more win this season. It would be the team's first win in conference play this season.

After two sound defeats last weekend against Kodiak — 58-13 and 33-28 — the Lady Mariners have their work cut out for them.

Against Kodiak's full-court press, the Lady Ms found themselves utterly helpless, with rampant turnovers and missed shots bringing the Lady Ms' total score in Friday's first quarter to a paltry 4 compared to the Lady Bears' 23-point scoring spree.

In the second quarter, the Lady Ms' offense could not rebound, posting just a single point off a free throw from Liz Needham.

The second half followed the same line, with just a handful of points from the field rounded off with a pair of free throws for the Lady Ms against consistent double-digit offense from the Lady Bears.

On Saturday, the Lady Ms matched up against the Lady Bears' Junior Varsity squad posting a much closer game that ended in defeat only after a last quarter rally from Kodiak.

The Lady Ms dominated the first half of play, taking the lead in the first quarter and holding it up until the third quarter when the Lady Bears turned the tide, outscoring the Ms 12-10 in the quarter and bringing the score to within 3 before an explosive fourth quarter in which Kodiak scored 14 and the Ms simply could not answer.

The Lady Ms are currently in eighth place at 0-10 in the Northern Lights Conference and 1-21 on the season.
