Mary Thomas, a prevention specialist with the Valdez Counseling Center, suggested that the drug use is a community problem, rather than a school problem, and added that most of the use is not during school but rather takes place "at night with friends" or at parties.
The study reported that 38 percent of sophomores that used alcohol did so at home when their parents did not know about it.
Thomas said she believes the study will help the community deal with the problems.
"Working together we can change this. Everyone plays a role," Thomas said. "There is a lot of great help available in the community."
Some findings of the survey werenpit as negative. Forty-nine percent of freshmen and 59 percent of sophomores reported no use.
