Thursday >Moose 44, Mariners 42, OT The Mariner boys and the second-seeded Palmer Moose put on quite a show Thursday, playing probably the most exciting game of the tournament. After falling behind 23-16 at halftime, the Ms outscored Palmer 7-5 in the third quarter and then scored 14 points in the fourth. With 18 seconds left in regulation and his team trailing by one point, Dean Devaney nailed a three-pointer only to have the Moose come back down the court and send the game to overtime on a Mitch Swetzof dunk with four seconds left. In overtime, the Moose pulled ahead and won by two, 44-42. Homer was just 1for 9 from the foul line in the game. Warriors 58, Lady Mariners 35 Facing the always tough Wasilla Warriors, led by star guard Jenna Johnson, the third-seeded Lady Mariners kept the game relatively close until the second half, when the Warriors outscored them 30-17 on their way to a 58-35 victory. For Homer, Lindsay Layland led the way with 12 points while Deanna Weaver added 10. Friday Bears 48, Lady Mariners 32 On Friday, the Lady Ms were eliminated from competition with a 48-32 loss to the host Kodiak Bears, who were led by Rachel Norton - 16 points - and Betsie McCarty - 15 points. Homer led for much of the first half but fell behind after a second quarter Bears run put them up 17-15 at the half. In the fourth quarter, Norton hit two three-pointers to seal the game. The loss means Homer will not have an opportunity to play in the state tournament and their up-and-down season has come to a close. Bears 69, Mariners 58 Also on Friday, the Mariners found themselves fighting for their playoff lives against the host Bears, a team they split two games with in Homer just last week. In the end, an energetic Bear team, led by Raphael Mautitia's 18 points and David Diocares' 16, just had more in the tank than the Ms and cruised to a 69-58 win. The Homer boys were eliminated from competition in the loss. Aaron Selbig can be reached at aaronselbig.@homernews.com.
