Not that anything really worrisome happens on March 15 hereabouts. Good Friday? Now that's another story. Alaskans know to whistle in the dark on Good Friday, lest another big earthquake or shipwreck come along. The Betster notes for the record that Mount Spurr is at Code Bert (that's yellow on the official Sesame Street version of the Homeland Security Advisory System). You might want to think twice about snowboarding on Spurr that day. Just a thought.
But today? March 10 is just another day, one third of the way through Mud Month, and slouching toward spring and a perfect day to start thinking about things to do with all these cool Best Bets:
BEST WOMEN ROCK DAY: Want to celebrate the contributions of our wives, mothers, sisters and daughters? Well, uh, actually, International Women's Day was this Tuesday, but hey, here in this time challenged hamlet, who cares? Tonight at 7 p.m., Kindness Without Borders, Vessels of Hope and Amped Café sponsor a celebration with a Nepali dinner and music by Judy Gorman at Amped Café on Pioneer Avenue. A fund-raiser for the Nepali Women's Services Project, tickets are $20 at the Homer Bookstore and the café.
BEST A MILL HERE, A MILL THERE BET: A mill is only a tenth of a cent, but add 'em up, and pretty soon you're talking a pile of change. Mill rates, sales taxes, user fees or revenue enhancements, it's how guvmint pays for everything from fire trucks to flag poles. Have some thoughts about how it all should settle out? Go to this month's Community Conversation at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Pratt Museum, when Deland Anderson facilitates a discussion of taxes. City manager Walt Wrede will be there to add his 20 mills worth.
