student news

Peggy Lee Tuttle, daughter of Ron and Gay Pendleton of Homer, received her Bachelor of Science degree in December from the University of Alaska Southeast. Tuttle graduated magna cum laude in accounting, with an emphasis in business administration. She is a 1994 graduate of Homer Hihg School and currently resides in Mobile, Ala., with her hsuband, Chris, and children, Cade Scott and Kaylee Ann.

The South Peninsula Hospital Foundation has awarded $1,870 to the following students at Kachemak Bay Campus, Kenai Peninsula College-University of Alaska Anchorage: Lance Cahoon Dinwoodie received a $500 scholarship for studies in allied health; Tina Barton and Cary Long each received $685 scholarships for Certified Nursing Assistant training. Dinwoodie's goal is to obtain a Bachelor of Science in nursing and serve as a flight nurse in rural Alaska. Barton plans to earn her CNA and eventually become a registered nurse. Long is currently a Homer voflunteer firefighter and works in construction.

March 25: Ice skating party at the Kevin Bell Ice Arena, 1-3 p.m. All homeschooling families are welcome. Bring your own skates or use some at the rink. Refreshments provided; free admission.

April 1: The SBA science test for Homer Connections students in grades 4, 8 and 10 will be given at Glacierview Church, 8:45 a.m.

April 6-8: Required SBA/HSGQE testing for all Connections students in grades 3-10 and HSGQE retakes for grades 11-12, 8:45 a.m. Contact the office for testing locations.

Note: Homer Connections office has Standards Based Assessment SBA-HSGQE Practice Tests and Scoring Guides available for grades 3-10.

Girls state

The 2010 session of Girls State will be held June 13-19 at Meier Lake Conference Center near Wasilla. The applicant's registration and transportation to-from the session will be paid by the American Legion Auxiliary. Apply early. Applications can be picked up at school counselor offices. Applications are due March 22, and interviews will be shortly after that date. For applicants from across the bay, special arrangements will be made. Contact an auxiliary member through the post, 235-8864, or Darlene Sheldon, Girls State chairman, 235-6789 for information or applications.

Competition

"Doodle 4 Google Contest 2010" offers for students in grades K-12 an opportunity to draw a Google logo for the Google homepage ispired by the theme, "If I could do anything, I would..." Deadline to register is 11:59:59 p.m. March 17, with entries to be submitted no later than 11:59:59 p.m. March 31. The winning doodle will be featured on Google.com May 27. The winner ow only has the art featured o nthe homepage, but also received a $15,000 college scholarship, a trip to Google New York, a laptop computer, a Wacom digital design tablet and a T-shirt with a picture of the winning doogle. The winner's shcool will receive a $25,000 grant. For information, see www.google.com/doogle4google

scholarship

The Kenai Borough Employees Association scholarship committee is accepting appications for three scholarships of $500 each. The scholarships are available to all 2010 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, including public, private and home schools. Applications and instructions are available from any KPB high school counselor's office or on the borough's Web site, www.borough.kenai.ak.us. Applications must be delivered or postmarked by March 31. They can be mailed or dropped off at the Kenai Peninsula Borough, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 144 N. Brinkley St., Soldotna, AK 99669.

The Alaska State Employees Association, Kachemak Bay Chapter, is offering a scholarship in the amount of $500 to a graduating senior from the Kachemak Bay area. The scholarship is available to a senior wanting to further his/her education at an accredited college, university or technical shcool. Deadline for submitting an application is April 1. Applications are availbale through school counselors or at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game front desk.

Applicants are now being sought by Rotary International for scholarships to earn a two-year masters-level degree in international studies and peace and conflict resolution. Rotary International will award 60 such scholarships to six universities worldwide later this year. Nominees will be forwarded from District 5010 to Rotary International through a selection process set to begin immediatley. Awards will be for the 2001-2013 term. Become an exchange student

Local high school students interested in becoming exchange students in many different European countries, Canada, Mexico, China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa are being sought by the nonprofit ASSE International Student Exchange Program, formerly American Scandinavian Student Exchange. Exchange students live with a caring host family while attending high school and learning about the language and culture of their chosen host country. Students interested in becoming an exchange student abroad for either an academic year, semester or summer program should call (800) 733-2773.
