Girls' team looks ahead to developing skills to put into play next year

BY RYAN M. LONG
Staff Writer

Homer's girls basketball team lost two last weekend in region play at Skyview, 62-15 against Wasilla and 61-23 against Soldotna. For the Lady Mariners the losses were the end to a long and trying season.

Against Wasilla, the Lady Mariners were blanked in the first quarter 16-0 and couldn't stand up to the following three quarters of lopsided scoring in favor of Wasilla, despite turning on their offense in the second half, scoring 13 of their game total 15 points.

Against SoHi the Lady Mariners' performance was solid, but the chances of coming out on top after a 19-4 first quarter deficit and a show-stopping SoHi 23-point third quarter quickly dwindled.

It's been a difficult season for the Lady Ms, who have been unable to come up with a win since December in Cordova.

The Lady Mariners, however, are looking forward to next season to improve on the skills they have, develop the skills they do not, take away what they can from this season, and move on.

"We have some strong kids coming up in this program. Our numbers aren't deep yet and that's one of the big things. The only way to grow is to catch kids at a younger age so we do need to build our feeder programs if we're going to compete," said Head Coach Deb Lowney.

Lowney said that the key to victory next year is going to come down to how much each player puts into basketball in the off season, but that's a challenge as well.

"We need to get these kids doing something year around. That's tough because we're a small school with multi-sport athletes, and obviously coaches want their players focusing on one sport at a time," said Lowney. "It really is a community commitment. It's not for a lack of desire, but we just do not have the system built to help them build skills year around."
