Charles Trowbridge of Homer has qualified for the 2009 dean's list at Eastern Oregon University. To qualify, students must achieve and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while completing a minimum of 12 hours of graded coursework for the duration of the term.

Fourth annual essay contest for all high school students from Ninilchik to across the bay is being sponsored by the Pregnancy Care Center of Homer. Almost $7,000 has been awarded in the past three years. Write a personal essay on "How I Value Life" of 600 words or less. Writing contest for grades 3-12 is being sponsored by the American Legion Post in Homer. The essay theme is "Soldiers, Past and Present America, Honor Your Veterans." Applications can be picked up at local elementary and high schools. Deadline is April 15. THere are five classes with a winner in each age division awarded $50 at the local level. The American Legion has announced Girls State will be held June 6-12 and Boys State June 14-21 at Meier Lake Conference Center, Wasilla. The Americain Legion Post and Auxiliary Units pay registration fees. Application packets for Girls State are available at local schools.
