After heavy snows, Kachemak Nordic Marathon will have some changes
STAFF REPORT
Skiers are in for a workout this weekend at the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club's annual Kachemak Nordic Marathon, as recent heavy snowfall has left the course in dire need of a thorough grooming.
The course has been shortened from the original 42 km to between 25 and 30 km, though the trail will still lead from the trailhead at Lookout Mountain to the finish at Baycrest just off the Sterling Highway.
Groomers have been out in force getting the trails in the best shape the can for the March 13 marathon.
The day's schedule includes a one-way shuttle bus leaving the Baycrest Trails at 9 a.m. headed for Lookout Mountain trails. Bib pickup and registration is from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. and the race will start at 10:30 a.m.
So far the best estimate for appropriate waxing is a 1:1 mix of both Toko HF red and LF blue, similar to what many used in the Tour of Anchorage last weekend.
The wax room at Homer High School will be open from noon to 3 p.m. today for those looking to get in on waxing early.
