HOMER’S BEST BETS

Holy Circadian Rhythms, people have been grumpy this week. Yeah, yeah, that weather broke, thanks to the Betster’s magical powers of meteorology. On top of a nice little snowfall we got Daylight Saving Time three weeks early.

Zip, there went that early sunrise.

A few years ago, one of the Betster’s friends got shot in the, uh, gluteus maximums while he biked around Daytona Beach, Fla. Joe had already collected some shrapnel courtesy of Victor Charlie back in Vietnam, so his doctor decided not to remove the .22 slug.

“What’s another spot on a leopard?” the doctor said.

Which is what we might as well call Daylight Saving Time — Another Spot on the Leopard Time. What’s an hour saved at night when by solstice the sun sets at 11:30 p.m.? By the end of March, we’ll have earned back that hour we lost last Sunday morning.

The only reason to bother with Daylight Saving Time in Alaska is so you can call Uncle Ted back in D.C. and maybe catch one of his assistants before they head home for the day. It’s not like the bad old days when Juneau was two hours ahead — chronologically speaking — and you might actually have to do business in the capital.

So lighten up, Betsteroids. Cranky about that lost hour? Sleep in on Saturday or take a nap, and when you’ve caught up on your beauty sleep, hey, think about some of these Best Bets:

BEST AND ANOTHER PROBLEM BET: Sheesh, what with global warming and stuff, the oceans are taking a pounding. Here’s another worry: acidification. Listen from 3:45-5:30 p.m. today at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center when environmental chemist Dr. Jeff Short discusses this issue.

BEST SHOWTIME BET: Hey, we all know Homer kids are smart, funny and way talented. Need proof? Check out the Homer Middle School Talent Show at 6 p.m. today in the school gym. Donations benefit the middle school trail project.

BEST BUT OF COURSE BET: Their language might be French, but their music is international — a little ska, a little Gypsy and toe-tapping, get up and dance fun. Check out Samarabalouf at 8 p.m. Friday at the Homer Theatre. Tickets are $25 at the door.

BEST GREEN DAY BET I: That’s Green Day as in St. Patrick’s Day, and Holy Shamrock, is this town hopping. The Whipsaws play at 10 p.m. Friday night at the Down East Saloon, so you could catch ’em after Samarabalouf, but if you go Saturday, St. Pat’s Day, go early at 8 p.m. and help Julia Vinciguerra raise money to run a triathlon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training program. There will be auctions, etc., and then at 10 p.m. it’s full-throttle, roadhouse rock.

BEST GREEN DAY BET II: Here’s a St. Patrick’s Day event that’s also a good cause. At 7 p.m. Saturday at the Anchor River Inn, it’s a benefit auction for Bob Sewell and Joey Allred to raise money to help them rebuild after a fire.

BEST GREEN DAY BET III: For gosh sakes, you will drink sensibly on Saturday, right? Designated driver, take a cab — you know the drill. Don’t get hungover, because Sunday it’s the American Legion’s Scavenger Hunt starting at 11 a.m. at the post on East End Road. The hunt runs 12:30-4 p.m. Donate prize money to the charity of your choice.

BEST PASS BIG HOLED SHAKER BET: You’ll be learning how to tell the salt from the pepper shaker at the Independent Living Center’s Blind Man’s Bluff Dinner at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Homer Flex High School. With a blindfold on, those other senses will be important — a way to experience life as the visually impaired do. Tickets are $15, at the ILC on Bartlett Street.
