The Eagles avenged a 36-33 loss to the Sea Otters on Thursday with a victory to earn a state berth and second place on Saturday. Seldovia finished third at the tournament.
It is the first state tournament berth for the Cook Inlet Academy girls since 1988. The mother of Amie Smithwick, a player on the current team, was on that 1988 team. CIA boys assistant coach Doug Munn said a big difference between the Thursday and Saturday games was the Eagles, who have no depth, were able to stay out of foul trouble.
CIA had a 28-24 lead entering the final quarter, then Melissa Moffis and Brooke Forsi took over. Moffis had 12 of her game-high 17 points in the final quarter and also hit all six of her foul shots in the final eight minutes. Forsi hit seven of her eight foul shots in the final quarter en route to 13 points in the game.
Jennifer Giles paced Seldovia with 12 points.
