2009-2010 school year: The state of Alaska has changec current imunization requirements. Children in K-6 will be required to provide medically verified documentation in one of three ways: 1) proof of two doses of varicella vaccine or in the waiting period between doses (one dose required for preschool children; 2) documentation of the disease signed by an Alaska-licensed MD, DO, ANP or PA using the official state form; or 3) valid medical exemption of the new state required form. Mommy and Me: Bring your baby to an afternoon of basic yoga and stretching. Baby books, music and infant playtime e ncouraged while moms stretch, socialize and get ready for an active summer. Prenatal and postnatal yoga DVDs will be used; ideas for fitting exercise with baby will be shared. Meet other moms. Lead by Emilie Springer. Pilates: This method of exercise will strengthen your core msucles, stretch and strengthen the body to keep it in balance and alignment. Strengthening the core and improving posture and bod mchanics may be able to treat or avoid lower ack and neck pain. Learn basic Pilates mat skills, breathing, posture and proper exercise technique using the neutral psine. Taught by physical therapist Teresa Olesch. It is meant for all levels and abilities and is safe for most people. Bring a yoga mat or towel. Turesdays, 5-6 p.m., March 19-May 28, Homer High School. HoWL! Homer Wilderness Leadership School: This program is committed to providing outdoor experiential education to young poeple in Homer, focusing on outdoor leadership and survival. STUDENT NEWS
Fourth annual essay contest for all high school students from Ninilchik to across the bay is being sponsored by the Pregnancy Care Center of Homer. Almost $7,000 has been awarded in the past three years. Write a personal essay on "How I Value Life" of 600 words or less. Writing contest for grades 3-12 is being sponsored by the American Legion Post in Homer. The essay theme is "Soldiers, Past and Present America, Honor Your Veterans." Applications can be picked up at local elementary and high schools. Deadline is April 15. THere are five classes with a winner in each age division awarded $50 at the local level. The American Legion has announced Girls State will be held June 6-12 and Boys State June 14-21 at Meier Lake Conference Center, Wasilla.
