A cappella group coming in April
Ball in the House tickets are now on sale at HCOA. Ball in the House is five guys, five voices. “This Boston-based group takes a cappella to the next stage, with vocal/drums/beat box and vocal bass under their pop harmonies to create a sound that’s hard to believe,” said HCOA director Hope Finkelstein. They will be working with and performing this concert with the Homer High School Swing Choir. Show time is 7 p.m. April 11 at the Mariner Theatre. Tickets are $25 general, $20 HCOA members and $12 youth and available at The Bookstore, Etude Studio, and HCOA.
Bushells receive award
Homer musician and writer John and Sharon Bushell received a $5,000 James Patterson PageTurner award for their musical, writing and teaching work. For the last three years the Bushells have been touring the Lower 48 presenting their Bernie Jones assembly, a presentation with Johnny B playing piano while Sharon Bushell reads from her “Trouble With Bernie” books. Sponsored by best selling mystery writer James Patterson, the PageTurner awards honor people and organizations that encourage books and reading.
“Kids, adults and educators alike all sent in nominations praising how much their hard work and fantastic message has touched them, and made them want to read everyday,” the awards committee said.
Hamell on Trial plays April 5
Singer-songwriter Hamell on Trial returns to Homer April 5 at Duggan’s Waterfront Pub. Called “a homicidal Otto Preminger” by Rolling Stone, he describes his music as “a rock and roll show. Period.” Tickets go on sale March 23 and are on sale through Downward Dog Productions at www.downwarddogalaska.com.
