The Following Scholarships are available:




The Kachemak Board of Realtors will award a total of $2,000 in scholarships to one or more applicants. Applications are available to graduating high school students from the Homer, Anchor Point and Ninilchik areas with plans to pursue career training in a vocational or technical field, or a 2-year or 4-year college degree. To apply, include a short essay about yourself that includes future goals and career plans, school activities, awards and achievements, employment, community service, interests and hobbies; two letters of recommendation; and an official high school transcript. Mail to The Kachemak Board of Realtors, P.O. Box 2660, Homer, AK 99603, or hand-deliver to Mary or Karen at Coastal Realty, 203 W. Pioneer Ave., Homer. A personal interview may be required. Deadline is April 20.

Delta Kappa Gamma, Omicron Chapter is offering a scholarship to a woman from the southern Kenai Peninsula in the amount of $1,500 for the coming academic year. Candidate must be an undergraduate woman with at least two years of college experience working toward a degree in education, attend an accredited college or university in Alaska, and have proof of current residency on the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. Compile a copy of transcripts, letter of recommendation, a resume of current personal information, proof of residency on the Kenai Peninsula, a very brief statement of financial need and a short paragraph stating plans after obtaining your degree, and send them to Deborah Smith, 41589 Spruce Knoll St., Homer, AK 99603. Deadline is April 24.

Two $1,000 scholarships are offered to Alaska residents who are college or university students planning a career in a communications field by Alaska Professional Communicators, the Alaska chapter of the National Federation of Press Women. To apply a student must be enrolled at a four-year college. Candidates are selected on the basis of promise in their chosen field, need for the scholarship and scholastic achievement, in that order. The American Cancer Society is offering applications for the Cancer Survivor College Scholarship Program. Students must be cancer survivors diagnosed before the age of 21 and age 25 or younger at the time of application, graduating from high school or continuing college in the upcoming school year, a U.S. citizen and resident of one of the society’s great west division states, have a 2.5 GPA and be a full-time student. The Association of Alaska School Boards is offering 10 $1,000 June Nelson Memorial Scholarships to graduating seniors attending a public school. To apply, visit www.aasb.org. Applicants should include a copy of their high school transcript with cumulative GPA, an acceptance letter from a business, trade or college institution, two letters of recommendation, SAT or ACT scores and a completed student involvement form. Students will answer the essay question, “What can students, parents and communities do to improve public education in Alaska?” Application deadline is April 3.

The Alaska State Employees Association Kachemak Bay Chapter is offering a scholarship of $750 to a graduating senior from the Kachemak Bay area for continued education at an accredited college, university or technical school. For information or an application, contact your school counselor or call 235-5111. Application deadline is April 6.

The Anchor Point Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, Xi Upsilon is offering a $750 scholarship to a graduating senior living within the Anchor Point Fire Service District. Applications are available from high school counselors. Applications must be received or postmarked by April 14. The Homer Chamber of Commerce will award two $500 scholarships to graduating students from the greater Homer area for educational costs at college, university, vocational or trade school. Application deadline is 5 p.m. April 9. Applications are available at high school guidance counselors’ offices, at the chamber of commerce at 201 Sterling Highway and online at www.homeralaska.org.

The Homer Emblem Club No. 350 is offering four $1,000 scholarships for graduating seniors in the Homer, Anchor Point, Ninilchik, Seldovia area. To apply, see your high school counselor or call 235-6131. Applications must be received by April 27.

The Homer Kachemak Bay Rotary Club offers two $1,000 scholarships for Homer High School graduates this year. Pick up application forms from the school counselor’s office.

The Homer Elks Lodge is accepting applications from graduating seniors and other students desiring to continue their education. Both academic and vocational scholarships are available. This year, $5,000 will be made available for this program. Applications must be submitted to Homer Elks Lodge No. 2127, 215 W. Jenny Lane, Homer, AK 99603, Attn: Scholarship Application Committee. For application packets see your school’s career counselor or contact the Homer Elks Lodge at 235-2127. Deadline is April 9. The

Homer Foundation has five scholarships available for area students: the Alain and Daniel Rieser Scholarship for foreign language study, the Homer Community Science Scholarship supporting post-secondary education in the life sciences, the Health Care Providers Scholarship supporting students interested in pursuing a health care field, the Drew Scalzi Memorial Maritime Scholarship supporting students of fishing families and/or students wishing to pursue a career in Alaska’s maritime industry and the Diane Wambach “Shoot for the Stars” Scholarship supporting education and training for young people with a plan to pursue their dream. Applications are available and may be requested via mail, phone or e-mail, picked up at the Homer Foundation or the Homer High School Counselor’s office or downloaded from the Homer Foundation’s Web site at www.homerfund.org. The deadline for all applications is May 1. Call Joy Steward at 235-0541 for information.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is sponsoring scholarships for a 2007-2008 full-year tuition waiver from the Alaska Vocational Technical Center and a 2007-2008 full-year tuition waiver from Kenai Peninsula College. The two scholarships apply to this year’s 2007 graduating seniors. Applications are available at on the Web at www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/departments.aspx?id=50 or contact your local school counselor for information. Applications must be postmarked by Friday. The Kenai Borough Employees Association scholarship committee is accepting applications for four scholarships of $500 each. The scholarships are available to all 2007 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough (including public schools, private schools and home-schooled). Applications and instructions are available from any Kenai Peninsula Borough high school counselor’s office, at the information desk of the borough building in Soldotna or on the Web at www.borough.kenai.ak.us. Applications must be delivered or postmarked by March 31. They can be mailed or dropped off at the Kenai Peninsula Borough, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 144 N. Binkley St., Soldotna, AK 99669.

AAA Alaska offers the Academics, Athletic and Arts scholarship to graduating Alaska high school seniors. To be eligible, seniors must maintain at least a 2.75 grade point average, actively participate in academics, athletics and the arts, and attend a college or accredited technical school in Alaska, Montana or Wyoming during the 2007-2008 school year. Eligibility requirements and an application can be downloaded from the Web at www.aaa.com.

The University of Alaska Foundation offers $500 to $8,000 scholarships for students attending any campus of the University of Alaska in 2007-08. To apply, fill out the UA Foundation statewide application at the Kachemak Bay Campus financial aid office or online at www.alaska.edu/uafound/processPolicy/awards.xml. Lists of available scholarships are available through The U.S. Commission for Scholastic Assistance. Send a self-addressed, stamped, business-size, number 10 envelope to The U.S. Commission for Scholastic Assistance, P.O. box 650067, Potomac Falls, VA 20165-0067.

The American Legion Auxiliary has the following scholarships available; for information, call 235-6789: American Legion Sept. 11th Memorial Scholarship; American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 Scholarship, May 1 deadline.
