“It’s huge for the 11 boys, huge for the organization and huge for the new ice rink,” said Hockey Coach Kevin Bell.
The Glacier Kings outscored their opponents a combined 36-12 and were led in scoring by Kiril Sanarov.
The speedy forward scored 22 goals in the tournament, a total unheard of at that age, Bell said.
In the championship game against the Anchorage All-Stars, Sanarov scored a goal to break a 5-5 tie with eight minutes left. The team held the All-Stars scoreless the rest of the way to win 6-5.
Earlier in the tournament, Homer beat Palmer 8-0, Kenai Peninsula Hockey Association 2-1, the Mighty Moose from Palmer 7-1, the Anchorage Hockey Association Sharks 7-2, and the Anchorage Ice Pirates 4-3 to go undefeated.
The Squirt tier III state tournament begins Thursday at the Homer Ice Arena and continues through Sunday. Ten teams from around the state are scheduled to compete in Homer. Squirts are hockey players ages 10 and under.
The Homer Glacier Kings mite team, consisting of 7- and 8-year-old hockey players won six straight games, including wins over teams from Palmer, Anchorage, and Soldotna to take the title.
