Under Hensen, the Division II Seawolves went 35-46 in three seasons.
UAA won the 2003 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout against Division I competition and recently completed a 13-14 campaign that produced Great Northwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and second team All-West Region pick Rebecca Kielpinski.
“After reviewing the season and taking a look at what my long-term coaching goals are, I feel this is the right time for me to make a move back to high-level Division I,” Hensen said in a press release. “I absolutely believe in our players and know that my staff and I have put this program in position for tremendous future success. I have gained invaluable experiences here at UAA, however my ultimate goal is to be a Division I head coach.
“This past spring I turned down a first-assistant coaching position at a major Division I program because of my commitment to the development of the players that my staff and I had signed. I am anxious to take my experiences and build upon them at the Division I level. I am in the process of talking to a variety of people and look forward to what the future holds.”
“Coach Hensen’s teams have always been hard-working and dedicated,” said UAA Athletic Director Dr. Steve Cobb. “We will never forget the joy that she helped bring the community and campus by winning the Shootout, and she produced an outstanding recruiting class last season. Coach Hensen is sure to be a success where she goes, and we wish her the best.”
