Otter Beach Educational Center students hold “Soul Soup,” a fund-raiser and reader’s theater, from 5-7 p.m. April 6 at Two Sisters Bakery. Local potters have donated soup bowls. Purchase a bowl, and Two Sisters fills the bowl with soup. At 6 p.m., students present “The Hungry Thing,” a reader’s theater about soup.

Proceeds benefit Otter Beach, a private educational center serving Homer for 12 years. Contributing potters include Paul Dungan, Lisa Wood, Matt James, Ty Gates, Michelle la Friniere, Kyle Lints, Cynthia Morrelli, Ryjil Christenson, Ruby Haigh and Paul Eneboe.

Mystery writer at sea with Coasties

Homer mystery writer Dana Stabenow has been on patrol with the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Munro in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Stabenow, author of “Blindfold Game,” a thriller about the Coast Guard, left San Diego, Calif., March 16 with the crew of the Munro. She previously sailed with the USCGC Alex Haley as part of her research for “Blindfold Game.”

The Munro is on patrol doing homeland security, drug interdiction and, if needed, search and rescue. Stabenow has a blog at her Web site, www.stabenow.com.

‘Beluga Days’ now out in paperback

Homer writer Nancy Lord’s book, “Beluga Days: Tracking the Endangered White Whale,” has been released in trade paperback by The Mountaineers Books. The book was first published in hardcover as “Beluga Days: Tracking a White Whale’s Truths” by Counterpoint Press in 2004.

Publishers Weekly said of the book, “With skillful writing and respect for all her subjects, Lord presents some of the agonizing scientific and cultural dilemmas of saving these animals.” Booklist called it “an intriguing blend of scientific writing and impassioned journal of discovery.”

“Beluga Days” is available for $16.95.
