There was a private viewing for family at Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005. A memorial service was held at the American Legion in Ninilchik at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005.
Crandell was born in Vallejo, Calif., on March 8, 1963. He attended Benicia High School in Benicia, Calif. He moved to Alaska in 1988. While he and longtime companion Nancy Webb were traveling around the state eight years ago, they fell in love with the Kenai Peninsula and decided to relocate from Eagle River. Within a few months, they had purchased a home on the north side of Ninilchik River, where they have continued to live. Crandell was employed by Nabors Alaska Drilling on the North Slope.
Webb said, "He enjoyed archery with his family and being with his friends. He loved to hunt, even though when he was on a hunting trip in 1998, he was gored by a moose and had a scar that ran all the way up his arm. We went snowmachining, fished together, camped together, hiked together. There wasn't much we didn't do together. He was so happy and always had a smile."
His parents said, "Howard enjoyed living life to the fullest. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed snowmachining. Alaska is the perfect place for his interests, so it is fitting that this is his final resting place."
Crandell is survived by his longtime companion, Nancy Webb; his parents Lauren and Mary Ann Crandell of Redding, Calif.; brothers Walt, Melvin and Earl Crandell, all of Redding; daughter Bobbi Crandell of Eagle River; nephews Chris, Kenny, Jacob, Nick and David Crandell, all of Redding; nieces Heather Curtin and Leslie Crandell, both of Redding; and sisters-in-law Susan and Margie Crandell, both of Redding.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
