First Friday will feature pieces like this, "Alaskan Gothic," acrylic portrait by Tim Troll at the Bunnell Street Gallery. Fireweed Gallery will reopen for the season with a beading exhibit. Picture Alaska Art Gallery is hosting Seward artist Dot Bardarson and the Ptarmigan Arts is continuing its Toby Tyler exhibit.
The First Friday gallery-hopping scene is back in full swing this month with art from near and far.

The Fireweed Gallery opens its doors again with "We Bead VIII," an annual exhibit of beaded and embellished fiber art by local artists.

This year's beaded wonders include several embellished furniture pieces, including a table and a wastebasket, said gallery owner Irene Randolph.

A notable piece, one Randolph describes as "museum quality," is an Athabaskin baby belt by Susan Ridgeway.

The piece, which is 4 feet long and 8 inches wide, is decorated with a floral pattern as well as tassels.

Other works include beaded bags, framed works and an Aleut beaded headdress by AnnaRodriguez Sanson.

The exhibit opens with a reception Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and runs through May 2.

At Picture Alaska Art Gallery, the watercolor art of Seward artist Dot Bardarson will be on display through the month.

Bardarson is one of 100 Alaska artists featured in the Alaska Geographic book "Painting Alaska," and has been featured in magazines. She has owned and operated Bardarson Studio in Seward for 17 years.

According to gallery-owner Lynda Reed, Bardarson focuses on her natural surroundings for much of her work.

"Themes of Dot's art include wildlife, but the animals she paints would probably be surprised if they saw themselves," she said.

A gallery opening will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Two youth-oriented art exhibits will be on display this month, as part of the Jubilee 2004 celebration of the art of those young area residents.

At the Homer Council on the Arts, the show featuring the work of students of Renee Jahnke will be on display through the month. The "Art for Kids" exhibit will open with a reception Friday from 5-7 p.m. and will be on display through the month.

Next week, the Pratt Museum's Jubilee 2004 art exhibit will open with a reception April 9 from 5-7 p.m. The opening will also showcase the Museum's annual Juried Art Exhibition.

At the Bunnell Street Gallery, the work of Tim Troll, artist and writer, will appear through the month.

Troll, brother of Alaska icon Ray Troll, paints colorful images, often focused on portraits, in acrylic. An artist's slide talk will be held Friday at 5 p.m. with a reception to follow.

At the newly renovated Ptarmigan Arts Back Room Gallery, new owner Karen "Jewels" East said the gallery is continuing to show Toby Tyler's exhibit this week. April 22, the gallery will hold an opening for the Kachemak Bay Campus "Student Art Showcase."
