Sharks, shark research grab students' attention

Staff report

Fourth-grade students in Carole Demers' class at West Homer Elementary School got some inside information on sharks last week, when Ken Goldman, a fisheries biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Homer, spoke with the students about research in which he is involved.

West Homer Elementary School students Ravi Cavasos, left, Colton Walkden and Katie Shank team up for shark dissection.

Goldman has spent more than 20 years focusing on these animals, with special emphasis on salmon sharks. This is the fourth year he has shared his findings with Demers' students.

This is the first year the class has dissected local sharks, which were provided by a parent. Proving an attention-getting activity, eight adults were present to supervise, as well as "a whole bunch of parents and grandparents," Demers said.

Goldman's presentation and the dissection are part of the school's environmental education program. It also includes students participating in an outdoor education camp at Peterson Bay and visiting the Kasitsna Bay Lab later this school year.
