AFS Intercultural Programs (formerly the American Field Service) is a worldwide, nonprofit organization that has been a leader in high school student exchange for 60 years. A new scholarship program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State for U.S., is offering 550 full scholarships to U.S. high school students to study abroad and learn languages that most students do not have an opportunity to learn but are rapidly becoming critical to know. The American Legion Auxiliary of Homer offers two $500 scholarships for graduating high school students with a B or C grade point average who plan to attend a state accredited college, university or vocational or technical school. CIRI Foundation: The CIRI Foundation has announced it is distributing more than 330 scholarship and grant awards totaling $900,000 for the fall 2008 term. Girls State: All high school junior girls in the Homer/Seldovia area -- including home school, private school and Flex School -- are invited to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program at Meier Lake Conference Center near Wasilla the week of June 6-12. This is a hands-on training in the processes of government and citizenship. Scholarships are available through this program. The American Legion Auxiliary pays for all expenses (registration and travel). Interviews will be conducted at Homer High School April 14, beginning at noon at the counselor's office. Special arrangements can be made for outlying areas. Call 235-6789 or notify the Homer High counselor's office. Applications can be picked up at local high schools or the Homer American Legion Post. Homer Chamber of Commerce will award one $1,000 scholarship to a graduating stu dent of the greater Homer area planning to attend Kenai Peninsula College. Applications will be available April 1 at area high school guidance counselor's offices, at the chamber at 201 Sterling Highway and online at www.homeralaska.org. Consideration will be given for type of education, goals of the applicant, community participation and financial need. A $500 scholarship will be awarded in memory of Brother Asaiah to a graduating student in the Homer area. Deadline to apply for both scholarships is 5 p.m. May 1. For information, call 235-7740. Homer Elks Lodge is accepting scholarship applications from graduating seniors and other students desiring to continue their education. Both acadmic and vocational scholarships are available. This year, $8,000 will be made available for this program. Packets are available at school career counselors or contact the Homer Elks at 235-2127.
