Swimmers hit Anchorage meet

Kevin Wythe posted a new club record in the 200-yard butterfly on Saturday as the Kachemak Swim Club took 16 swimmers to the Last Chance March Madness meet at the Bartlett High pool in Anchorage.

The annual meet provides swimmers with their final opportunity to qualify for Junior Olympic competition.

The Kings' 200 medley relay team of Kevin Wythe, Dakota Zellin, Brian Ritchie and Daryl Wythe placed first.

Not to be outdone, the 200 freestyle relay team of Anthony Augusto, Brian Ritchie and cousins Daryl and Kevin Wythe also took home a gold.

Kevin Wythe, who earned qualifying cut times with first-place swims in the 200 and 100 fly, also grabbed a blue ribbon in the 1,650-yard freestyle. He took second in the 50 backstroke.

Zellin swam to first-place finishes in the 100 individual medley and the 100 back. Zellin also had a third in the 100 back and a fourth in the 50 back.

Daryl Wythe placed second in the 200 freestyle and the 100 back, while grabbing a third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 back.

Augusto took fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 200 fly, while Ritchie placed fourth in the 200 fly and sixth in the 100 fly.

The Kachemak Swim Club will hold its Swim-a-Thon fund-raiser Friday night as team members above the Dolphin level will swim through the night.

The club hosts a celebratory buffet following the swim.

Calling all Little Leaguers

The Homer Little League will hold sign-ups from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and again the following Saturday, April 12, at Kachemak Wholesale, 637 E. Pioneer Ave.

Online registration is also available at www.homerll.org.

In either case, parents must produce an original or notarized birth certificate prior to the start of the season.

Suggested fees are $35 for tee-ball and $50 for other levels with a per-family cap of $125. Organizers stress that nobody gets turned away for financial reasons.

In addition to recruiting players, organizers are actively seeking managers as well as adult volunteers to umpire, staff snack booths and handle grounds keeping duties.

"We're looking for everything," said league official Bill Bell, adding that the league hopes to draft teams by the end of April and, weather permitting, begin playing around May 10.

The season typically runs into late June.

Bell said Homer hopes to host a number of tournaments in addition to regular season games.
