\Out of the rain

Sandy Stark takes shelter under a red umbrella at the Homer Harbor Monday as the P/V Augustine was commissioned.

If you're like the Betster and moved to Alaska from Back East, in the process you gained four hours in your life. Actually, since the B. came to Alaska before the time zones got switched back during one of the capital move dustups, I gained five hours. When south central Alaska stayed on Daylight Savings Time while Southeast went off, pfft!, there went one of those hours.

And now we've been robbed of another hour.

This might explain why everyone in town has been crabby this week. That early alleged-spring blizzard? The horizontal rain? The amusing slush? The clogged drains? That has nothing to do with our sour mood, I'm sure. We lost an hour of sleep Sunday morning, and if you're like me, we want it back now. None of this fall back stuff. Give us our lost hour!

Well, we immigrants still have a reserve, I suppose. And as the great philosopher William Gibson wrote in "Neuromancer," "Time be time, mon."

So take off an hour early from work, sleep in Monday or just sneak in a cat nap sometime over the next week. Sleep deprived or not, there will always be time enough for some of these Best Bets:

BEST A CLOSER WALK WITH THEE BET: For Christians, the reason for the season is this Holy Weekend, starting with Good Friday. Starting at the top of Baycrest Hill at 11 a.m. for the hardier souls, there's a Walk of the Cross. Follow along as the cross is carried to Faith Lutheran Church for the official start at noon and proceeds through town to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and out East End road to Homer Christian Church. St. John's holds Holy Friday mass at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and an Easter Sunday Mass at 11:30 a.m.

BEST THE GOOD STUFF GOES EARLY BET: Have you gone through your winter stash of books? Replenish your reading library at 10 a.m. Saturday for the spring Friends of the Library used book, baked goods and plant sale at the Homer Public Library.

BEST LOST OVOID OBJECT BET: The American Legion Auxiliary and the U.S. Coast Guard sponsor an Easter egg hunt and party from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Post at Mile 2.5 East End Road. Bring your own basket. There's also an Easter Egg Hunt at the Pratt Museum from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday.

BEST GREAT MINDS, GREAT SOLUTIONS BET: Drug and alcohol abuse hits parents and youth alike, wiTh effects throughout our community. How can we solve this problem? Come with your ideas and opinions when the Community Mental Health Center holds a community forum on alcohol and drug abuse from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the South Peninsula Hospital conference rooms.

BEST SHOW ME THE MONEY BET: How are we going to fund essential city services? And what are those services? The Homer City Council and Homer Chamber of Commerce hold a work session on long-range planning with economist Scott Goldsmith starting at 9 a.m.
