Talking peninsula real estate

Homer broker shares info about hot topic through radio show

It's under your feet, the backbone of the economy and now, thanks to 104.9 FM and Chris Story, being broadcast weekly through the Kenai Peninsula air waves.

It's real estate, and a new half hour radio show called Radio Realty delves into what makes the market tick.

Want to know how the Kenai Peninsula Borough appraiser tallies up your property value? Worried that the current credit crunch will make it harder to buy that Homer dream home? What about mill rates?

These topics, plus a look at current mortgage rates and more, are discussed from 12:30-1 p.m. each Wednesday.

Story, a Homer-area real estate broker and the show's moderator said the idea was a long time coming.

"Real estate is the thread with which the economy is woven," Story said.

There is a lot of information out there that people should know, and recent events in the nationwide market and new borough assessments have created a good opportunity to share that information, he said.

"Everybody is talking real estate," Story said.

On his first show, which aired March 21, Story invited Borough Assessor Shane Horan to discuss recent increases in taxable property values.

He said he plans on having Borough Mayor John Williams on the program in a few weeks to discuss tax rates.

The show is broadcast out of Story's office on the Sterling Highway and airs in Kenai, Soldotna, Seward and the southern Kenai Peninsula, Story said.

So far, sponsors are jumping on board.

Of the initial 14 area businesses the station approached to back the show, 14 signed on, he said.

Still, radio is a first for Story, who credits engineer Tim White and station owner Dave Becker for making the show work.

"They know what they're doing," Story said.

For his next show, Story has invited a Homer city representative to share information about the future of the town center/city hall project.
