For the boys, Mariner senior and Brazilian foreign exchange student Francis Caravahlo asserted himself early and often, scoring the first of his three goals less than two minutes into the game.
Caravahlo's second goal came from 40 yards out off a pass from Keith Bell and gave the Mariners a 2-0 halftime lead.
"It was a very well played first half," said Head Soccer Coach Mike Olsen.
After the break, Olsen said the defense, led by Joe Hoanin, Matt Satre, A.J. Isenhour, Tim Walsworth and Beto Cosio held off the Grizzlies attack.
Mariner goal keeper, Taber Webb, stopped all the shots that got past the defense to record the shutout.
The Mariners' — and Carvahlo's — third goal came at the 72-minute mark to seal the 3-0 Homer victory.
"Overall, both teams were pretty evenly matched with great end to end action," said Olsen. "We just got fortunate enough to put some balls in the back of the net."
The Mariner girls started their soccer season like they left last year's Region III tournament — beating Grace Christian.
Claire Siekaniec scored two goals, and Bailey Lowney added another as the Mariners ran over the Grizzlies 3-1.
The Mariners next series of games begin April 21 at Wasilla. They play at Colony and at Houston April 22 and 23.
