Judges and Judging
Winners were selected through a blind-judging system in which each entry was identified by a number and judges were unaware of the identity of the writer. Where possible, judging was performed outside the Kenai Peninsula by the judges identified below. They determined first, second and third places, and honorable mentions.

Fiction, Grades 10-12

Dana Stabenow is the author of 20 novels, various short stories and essays, and the "Alaska Traveler" column in "Alaska" magazine. She can be reached through her website, www.stabenow.com.

Nonfiction, Grades 3 and under, Grades 4-6 and Grades 7-9

Ernestine Hayes graduates in May with a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the University of Alaska Anchorage. She plans to return in fall to her home town of Juneau, where she will be an adjunct instructor at the University of Alaska Southeast.

Fiction, Open/Adult

Jo-Ann Mapson is the author of eight books, including novel "Blue Rodeo," which was made into a television movie with Kris Kristofferson. Her most recent novel is "Along Came Mary," from Simon & Schuster, who will publish, "Good-Bye, Earl" in December 2003. She teaches fiction in the Master of Fine Arts program in writing at the University of Alaska Anchorage, and lives in Anchorage with her husband, artist Stewart Allison, and their four dogs.

Poetry,

Grade 3 and under, Grades 4-6

Martha Bristow is a graduate student studying poetry and writing it at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She was born and raised in Alaska and lives in Fairbanks because she really likes it there. She has visited Homer and thinks Homer is very nice, too.

Fiction, Grades 3 and under,

Grades 4-6, Grades 7-9

Nina Kiriki Hoffman has been writing science fiction and fantasy for more than 20 years, and has sold more than 200 stories, plus novels and juvenile and media tie-in books. Her latest novel is "A Fistful of Sky" from Ace. A young adult fantasy novel, "A Stir of Bones," will come out from Viking in September 2003.

Nina works at a bookstore, does production work for a national magazine and teaches short story writing through her local community college. She lives in Eugene, Oregon with several cats, a mannequin and many strange toys.

Nonfiction, Grades 10-12, Open/Adult

Sherry Simpson chairs the University of Alaska Anchorage Department of Creative Writing and Literary Arts, where she teaches creative nonfiction. She is the author of "The Way Winter Comes," a collection of essays about Alaska life and wildlife.

Poetry, Grade 7-9, Grades 10-12,
Open/Adult

John Reinhard is the author of two poetry collections, "On the Road to Patsy Cline" and "Burning the Prairie." He teaches in the MFA program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and lives in Fairbanks with his wife Chris and their two children, Quinn and Matthew. His poems have been published in various journals and are occasionally featured in the Anchorage Press.
