HOMER’S BEST BETS

Holy particulates, Betsteroids! Just when you thought winter had uttered its last gasp, cowabunga, we got a little Easter sunrise wake-up call. Even in the flatlands, a couple of inches of fresh snow fell. Nobody told Ma Nature she’s not supposed to wear white before Memorial Day.

It’s beginning to look at lot like Point Barrow, doncha think? The Betster spent one fine summer at the Top of the World, which is how yours truly fulfilled a childhood dream of seeing snow fall in every month of the year. If this goes on, we could really shock the tourists. Hey, they might actually start believing all those myths about Alaska — igloos, polar bears and penguins, oh my. Global warming? Yeah, right. More like the Little Ice Age.

Only, just when you start to think spring won’t come, hey, look at what happened. By Tuesday bright sunshine melted most of the snow in town. Take an early morning walk and you’ll hear the varied thrush doing its ringing telephone imitation. Pretty much every flower bed around town has irises or tulips rising to the sun.

So while the crust skiing up on the ridge has been just awesome, in sea level Homer, it looks like spring might actually be coming. Hey, and just in time for Earth Day, too. This week’s Best Bet? Carpe solarem, and grab some rays while you’re having fun at Earth Day events. But should we get another sneak snowfall, la-de-da, go for Plan B, like some of these other Best Bets:

BEST LAST PLAYER STANDING BET: You think football is tough? Try playing nine soccer games in 14 days. That’s the grueling schedule for the Mariner soccer teams this season. At 6 p.m. Wednesday at Homer High School the girls take on Ketchikan after several away games. The Mariner Boys play at 4 p.m.

BEST ALL HANDS ON DECK BET: What better place to discuss search and rescue than on the deck of a cutter that has helped pluck a few from the icy deep? At 5:30 p.m. Friday, this month’s Pratt Museum Community Conversation is on the mess deck of the US Coast Guard Cutter Hickory at the Pioneer Dock on the Spit. Deland Anderson facilitates the talk about searches, rescues and how not to meet people in bright orange Mustang suits.

BEST SHARE THE WORD BET: Libraries have been practicing recycling since, well, Guttenberg cranked out the first book. Even if someone has put eye tracks on a novel, hey, it’s as good as new. Dip into the literary pool at 10 a.m. Saturday for the annual Homer Public Library Book, Plant and Bake Sale.

BEST IF GOD IS SO SMART BET: Whoever made knees has some ‘splaining to do. Intelligent design or klutzy evolution? That’s the topic when Amy Bollenbach speaks at 12:30 p.m. for the Unitarian Universalists meeting Sunday at Kachemak Community Center.

BEST BRAINIAC BET: It’s all about the body over at the Pratt Museum. This week’s examination of our corporeal shells continues with “Mental Illnesses are Brain Disorders.” Crystal Choate of NAMI Kalifornsky presents a talk at noon and 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Pratt Museum.

BEST HOW YA DOING? BET: What’s the state of the city? There were rumors that Daily Show correspondent Ed Helms was scheduled to give an in-depth report, but the Homer Chamber of Commerce decided to go with someone who actually knew something. At noon Tuesday, Homer City Manager Walt Wrede presents “The State of the City” at the Best Western Bidarka Inn. Hey, maybe he’ll talk about the city’s plan to clean up all that freedom glaze on the Spit.
