Student news

Andrew Faulkner, the son of Jon and Sara Faulkner, was named to the dean's list for the fall 2008 semester at The John Hopkins University. To be selected for this honor, a student must earn a grade of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while taking a minimum of 14 credit hours. Faulkner is majoring in civil engineering and expected to graduate in May 2010.

KENAI PENINSULA BOROUGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

April 29: Second annual Lower Peninsula Student Film Festival, 4:15-5:30 p.m., Homer Theatre, open to the community, $2 per person, filmmakers free.

Chapman School

Through Friday: Kindergarten registration.

Today: Open house for kindergarten registration, 6-7:30 p.m.

Connections Program

April 27-May 8: Reading Fluency Assessments (DIBELS/CBM) will be given by appointment for Homer Connections students in grades K-3. Call for an appointment.

April 30: Deadline for submitting requests for reimbursement.

May 1: Graduating seniors need to turn in their senior surveys.

Fireweed Academy

Ongoing: Open enrollment continues for Fireweed Academy's fall waitlist.

April 24: Circus Arts Skills Sharing, gym, 2-3 p.m. Note the new time.

Homer Flex School

Through today: Standards Based Assessment and HSGQE.

Homer Middle School

Friday: Husky Tracks begin.

McNeil Canyon Elementary School

April 28: Spotlight lunch honoring Lia Jacobsen, Zak Marwedel, Seth Miller, Mattea Allen, Jordan Beachy, Abby Middleton, Brenna Brady, Millie Fisher, Falcom Greear, Kaela Jiron, Piper Kassouni, Kyler Mahoney, Aunia Ormond, Rio Shemet Pitcher, Charly Tappan and Hudson Coggins. Parents are invited to join the students and the principal, 11:25 a.m.

West Homer Elementary

Friday: Hippie Day.

Community Schools

Mommy and Me: Bring your baby to an afternoon of basic yoga and stretching lead by Emilie Springer. Wednesdays, 5:15-6:15 p.m., through May 27, with no class May 6; Homer High School green room, $15 payable to Homer Community Schools.

Latin Dance (the workout) with Jeannette Argones is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Homer High School Green Room. Cost is $65 for six classes. Walk-ins welcome. Call 299-1127 or 235-6090 to register.

Pilates: This method of exercise is taught by physical therapist Teresa Olesch. Bring a yoga mat or towel. Thursdays, 5-6 p.m., through May 28, Homer High School. Fee $15 to Community Schools, plus punch card $5 per session, purchased from instructor. For information, call 399-5589.
