School Briefs




Chapman School

Through April 25: Artist in residence Noemi Howell, a dancer; working with all grades. Performance 2 p.m. Friday.

Today: Basketball, Nikolaevsk at Chapman, 3:30 p.m., grades 3-6.

April 25: Basketball, Ninilchik at Chapman, 4 p.m., grades 3-6.

April 26: Car wash, parking lot, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Fund-raiser for 7-8th grades trip to Seward to go whale-watching and visit SeaLife Center. Weather permitting.

April 28-May 9: Swimming, grades 3-4.



 
 
May 1: Site-based committee meeting, 3:30 p.m., library

May 8: Spring concert, 7 p.m.

May 16: Kindergarten graduation, 2 p.m.

Fireweed Academy

April 30: Challenger mission, 5-6 grades.

May 2: Math bowl, 6th grade, in Seward.

May 2-3: Fireweed is host to state annual charter school conference.

May 12-16: Sixth grade field trip to Fairbanks.

May 13-15: Deland Anderson, artist in the school.

Homer Connections

Connections is currently enrolling new and returning students for the 2008/09 school year.

April 28-May 9: Reading Fluency Assessments (DIBELS/CBM) will be given by appointment for Homer Connections students in grades K-3. Call our office for an appointment.

April 30: The deadline for submitting Requests for Reimbursement to the Homer Connections office.

May 1: There is a meeting for all Hesketh Island field trip students, 2-3:30 p.m., Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. Protocol for intertidal survey will be covered.

Ongoing: Read Your Way to Spring recreational reading program has begun for Homer Connections students. Come to our office to sign up and pick up your punch card.

Homer Flex High School

Homer Flex High School helps students earn high school diplomas through standards and performance-based instruction. Flex serves those who are behind in graduation credits or who need an alternative environment to balance school and work.

May 15: Science club field trip to Glacier Spit.

Homer Middle School

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: Track practice, 3:15 p.m.

April 25: Track in Homer, 3 p.m.

May 2: Track at Soldotna Middle School, 3 p.m.

May 6: Spring concert.

Kachemak Selo School

Thursdays: Computer classes for parents, after school.

April 28-May 2: Easter break.

May 6: In-service. No classes.

McNeil Canyon Elementary School

Fifth-sixth grade selling gift certificates for spring field trip. The gift certificates to $20, redeemable for $20 of merchandise at Fritz Creek Gardens. They are available through May 12 from fifth- and sixth-grade students, at the Homer Bookstore or at the school.

Today: Spotlight lunch honoring students Madilynne Elkington Wood, Karmyn Gallios, Abby Middleton, MacKenzie Ormond, Jessie Skalisky, Josie Yeoman, Hudson Coggins, Lilly Dearmoun, Alissa Cole, Evan Welty, Erica White, Koby Etzwiler, Gabe Brown, Tirzah Hardy, Richard Jacobsen, and Morgan Kelly. Parents are invited to join their child and the principal for lunch, 11:25 a.m.

May 8: "Bugz," spring concert, 6:30 p.m.

Nanwalek School

High school students interested in construction academy in June need to apply.

Today: Kachemak Bay Research Reserve personnel will be here all day.

Today-April 26: Native Youth Olympic athletes to Anchorage.

Nikolaevsk School

Ninilchik School

Congratulations to Heidi Skjold on her selection as our school's Outstanding Student the Year award presented by the Kenai Masonics at ceremony at Kenai Central High School April 16. All Masonic students received an engraved plaque, a letter from the Governor, and a $50 savings courtesy of the Masonics Lodge #11.

April 25: Parents of grades 5 and 6 are invited to attend the Drug Abuse Resistance

Paul Banks Elementary School

Through Friday: All students will have a week of swimming lessons.

Voznesenka School

April 28-May 2: Spring break.

May 9: Marine safety at Homer Harbor, grades 5-12. Includes students form Kachemak Selo.

May 16: Garbage pick-up day; from Voznesenka to McNeil.

West Homer Elementary School

May 2: Talent show, 7-8:30 p.m.

May 12: Step-up day; sixth graders to junior high, 1 p.m.

May 12: "Evening of Jack Dalton," with students reading their writings, exhibiting their works, sharing and listening as artist Jack Dalton tells one of his famous stories; 6-7:30 p.m.
