School Briefs






Chapman School

Through April 25: Artist in residence Noemi Howell, a dancer; working with all grades. Performance 2 p.m. Friday.

Today: Basketball, Nikolaevsk at Chapman, 3:30 p.m., grades 3-6.

April 25: Basketball, Ninilchik at Chapman, 4 p.m., grades 3-6.

April 26: Car wash, parking lot, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Fund-raiser for 7-8th grades trip to Seward to go whale-watching and visit SeaLife Center. Weather permitting.

April 28-May 9: Swimming, grades 3-4.

May 1: Site-based committee meeting, 3:30 p.m., library

Fireweed Academy

April 30: Challenger mission, 5-6 grades.

Homer Connections

Connections is currently enrolling new and returning students for the 2008/09 school year.

April 28-May 9: Reading Fluency Assessments (DIBELS/CBM) will be given by appointment for Homer Connections students in grades K-3. Call our office for an appointment.

April 30: The deadline for submitting Requests for Reimbursement to the Homer Connections office.

May 1: There is a meeting for all Hesketh Island field trip students, 2-3:30 p.m., Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. Protocol for intertidal survey will be covered.

Ongoing: Read Your Way to Spring recreational reading program has begun for Homer Connections students. Come to our office to sign up and pick up your punch card.

Homer Flex High School

Homer Flex High School helps students earn high school diplomas through standards and performance-based instruction. Flex serves those who are behind in graduation credits or who need an alternative environment to balance school and work.

May 15: Science club field trip to Glacier Spit.

Homer Middle School

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: Track practice, 3:15 p.m.

April 25: Track in Homer, 3 p.m.

Thursdays: Computer classes for parents, after school.

McNeil Canyon Elementary School

Fifth-sixth grade selling gift certificates for spring field trip. The gift certificates to $20, redeemable for $20 of merchandise at Fritz Creek Gardens. They are available through May 12 from fifth- and sixth-grade students, at the Homer Bookstore or at the school.

Today: Spotlight lunch honoring students Madilynne Elkington Wood, Karmyn Gallios, Abby Middleton, MacKenzie Ormond, Jessie Skalisky, Josie Yeoman, Hudson Coggins, Lilly Dearmoun, Alissa Cole, Evan Welty, Erica White, Koby Etzwiler, Gabe Brown, Tirzah Hardy, Richard Jacobsen, and Morgan Kelly. Congratulations to Heidi Skjold on her selection as our school's Outstanding Student the Year award presented by the Kenai Masonics at ceremony at Kenai Central High School April 16. All Masonic students received an engraved plaque, a letter from the Governor, and a $50 savings courtesy of the Masonics Lodge #11.

May 12: "Evening of Jack Dalton," with students reading their writings, exhibiting their works, sharing and listening as artist Jack Dalton tells one of his famous stories; 6-7:30 p.m.

Scholarships

Kachemak Board of Realtors will award a total of $3,000 in scholarships to one or more graduating high school students from the Homer, Anchor Point and Ninilchik areas with plans to pursue career training in a vocational/technical field or a two-year or four-year college degree. Application packet must include a short essay about the applicant including future goals and career plans, school activities, awards and achievements, employment, community service, interests and hobbies; two letters of recommendation; an official high school transcript, no minimum grade point average required; and a personal interview may be required. The criteria for granting the awards is at the discretion of the committee, but includes character, leadership, work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit and overall presentation. The award may be used for tuition, books or fees. Applications must be postmarked or hand delivered by Friday to Kachemak Board of Realtors, P.O. Box 2660, Homer, AK 99603, or to Kathy Westerburg, The Alderfer Group, 925 Sea Plane Court, Homer, AK 99603.

The Homer Foundation has more than $16,000 in scholarship funds available to area students. The scholarships are the Alain and Daniel Rieser Scholarship for foreign language study, the Homer Community Science Scholarship supporting post-secondary education in the life sciences, the Health Care Providers Scholarship supporting students serious pursuing a health care field, the Drew Scalzi Memorial Maritime Scholarship supporting students of fishing families and/or students wishing to pursue a career in Alaska's maritime industry, the Diane Wambach "Shoot for the Stars" Scholarship supporting education and training for young people with a plan to pursue their dream, the South Peninsula Professional Services Scholarship supporting students with outstanding academic achievements and a strong work ethic, and the Beluga Tail/Tale Writing Scholarship that will provide awards in both fiction and nonfiction writing. Applications are available and may be requested by mail, phone (235-0541) or email (jsteward@homerfund.org), picked up at the Homer Foundation or the Homer High School counselor's office, or downloaded from www.homerfund.org. Application deadline is Friday.

The Aleutian Harvester Memorial Fund, originally founded to assist in search efforts when a vessel is missing or lost at sea, will offer $1,000 scholarships to two 2008 high school graduates whose families are actively involved in the Alaska's commercial fishing-maritime industry. The scholarships assist in covering tuition at an accredited college, university or approved technical or trade school. Deadline is April 29. Applications are available from high school counselors.

Homer Kachemak Bay Rotary Club has announced a $2,000 scholarship for a Homer High School 2008 graduating senior. Obtain applications from the HHS counselor's office. Applications must be postmarked by May 1.

Homer American Legion has three $500 each scholarships available for B/C average graduating high school students in the Homer greater area including Seldovia, who are planning to attend a college or voc-tech school. Deadline is May 1. Applications are available at HHS, Kachemak Bay Campus, the Homer Public Library, American Legion Post 16 in Homer. For information, call 235-8864.

Icicle Seafoods Inc. of Homer will grant three $500 scholarships to any graduating student from Ninilchik, Anchor Point, Seldovia and Homer. Interested students need to submit a cover letter and resume, with references to their school counselors. Applicants do not have to be "A" or "B" students to be considered. Applications must be submitted to school counselors by May 9. Personal interviews will be conducted; applicants will be notified of the date and place of interview.

The International Pacific Halibut Commission funds several merit scholarships supporting university and technical college education. Contact Laura Black at (206) 634-1838, ext. 201, or Bruce Leaman, ext. 203. Application deadline is June 29.

Youth Conservation Corps opportunities

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is accepting applications for eight summer Youth Conservation Corps jobs. Applications are at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, Alaska Employment Service Office in Kenai or from local high school career counseling office. Applications must be received at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters on Ski Hill Road in Soldotna by close of business May 9. Call (907) 262-7021.

Elections seeks high school students

The Youth Vote Ambassador Program enlivens the interest of young people in the political process and in their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Ambassadors assist the Alaska Division of Elections by serving as election poll workers, checking in voters, confirming registration status and activating voting machines. Ambassadors must be at least 16, a high school student in good standing, recommended by their counselor or principal and have written permission from a parent or legal guardian. They must submit an application.
