Chapman Students draw on creativity of artist-in-school
Staff report
Thanks to support from the Alaska State Council on the Arts, a bit of in-school fund-raising and a donation from Chapman School's parent advisory group, the school's kindergarten through eighth-grade students recently enjoyed a visit from Anchorage artist Shala Dobson.

Artist Shala Dobson of Anchorage receives a "thank you" card from Chapman School fifth-grade student Taylor Ellison and classmates.
Techniques Dobson taught extended beyond pen to paper.
"I liked learning that when you are quiet you draw better. When I drew my teddy bear I saw that was true," said Chapman student Dani Ponte.
From April 9-19, Dobson gave lessons in drawing to each of the grades. Her visit concluded with an exhibit to which parents were invited. That event coincided with a volunteer recognition reception that increased the number of people viewing the students' artwork.
In addition to participating in artist-in-the-school opportunities, Dobson taught art in the Anchorage School District for more than 20 years.
Most of the student-created artwork graces the youngsters' homes. However, some will remain on permanent display at the school.
