Tire change deadline extended

Due to poor road conditions, Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan has issued an emergency order extending the studded-tire deadline on Alaska roads by two weeks. April 15 and May 1 are the normal deadlines to have studded tires removed; however April 29 was the extended deadline for roads south of 60 degrees north latitude and May 15 is the deadline for roads north of that latitude. "The extension should provide all motorists that additional margin of safety on lingering winter roads," the department said in a press released issued April 24. "The extension should also show that the state is concerned enough to remain flexible in deadlines to best ensure the safety on roads."
