Kids encourage community to clean up its act

Editor's Note: Carol Demers' fourth-grade class at West Homer Elementary School wrote the following letters to the editor, encouraging everyone to participate in the Homer Chamber of Commerce Cleanup Day on Saturday.

Trash drop-off will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Homer Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center parking lot. Bags will be available starting Friday at the chamber, the fire hall and Homer High School. The public is encouraged to start picking up trash now, prior to the drop-off. Prizes will be awarded in the categories of individual adult, individual youth, group, top recyclers, family, beach cleanup and judges choice. There will be a kids' grab bag for all participating children and refreshments for all. There are hidden prizes in favorite trash picking areas around town. Look for clear, zip-lock bags containing bright pink coupons within a three-mile radius of the chamber. Coupons must be redeemed with a bag of trash at the drop-off.

Join us Saturday, May 5th at 9 a.m. We can make Homer so nice that we can get double the people this summer. The chamber of commerce is handing out free bags. There are also prizes and first place gets $100. So join us and clean up our town.

Come to the Homer Chamber of Commerce for trash bags. When you are done, I bet you $100 we will have a cleaner town. The chamber of commerce will give you prizes, food and cash for just taking a few hours of your day to pick up litter. The Shorebird Festival is coming up and do you want them to say, "What is this? An alley would be cleaner!"

The animals will die with this trash around them. We are doing it for them too.

It is almost Homer Cleanup Day! You can get your bags at the Homer Chamber of Commerce. It starts May 5th, 9 a.m. You can get a prize for how many bags of trash you bring to the Homer Chamber of Commerce. The bags are free. There will be free food. Even though there are prizes, the best prize of all is a clean Homer! Please join us!

Thanks to Cleanup Day, it might straighten out. This trash is hurting poor animals!

How would you like it if you had a six-pack stuck around your neck? I just wish those candy wrappers, soda cans, broken bottles, rusty tools, bikes and toys were gone.

Join me on a mission to clean up Homer. There will be free prizes at the Homer Chamber of Commerce where you can get your bags. I'll let you in on a secret. I think you could get at least 10 bags of trash behind the high school or at least five bags of trash next to the Safeway parking lot.

I think it's important to make Homer a better place and when I say better, I mean beautiful. We don't want Homer to suffer from a terrible disease and that disease is litter.

So pitch in and help me complete that mission to help save the Earth on May 5.
