Epperson receives KBC award

Epperson

University of Alaska President Patrick K. Gamble and Regents Kirk Wickersham and Mary Hughes on Wednesday night presented Homer music teacher and arts supporter Mary Epperson the 2011 Meritorious Service award.

Epperson received the award at graduation ceremonies for Kachemak Bay Campus students.

The University of Alaska Board of Regents selected Epperson for the award in honor of her contributions in promoting the arts and her commitment to developing the Kachemak Bay Campus.

Epperson has served on the KBC Advisory Board since 1985. A Kenai Peninsula resident since 1954, Epperson previously received the Governor's Award for the Arts in 1988 and was named Citizen of the Year by the city of Homer in 2004.

Mayor James Hornaday declared May 24, 2010, as "Mary Epperson Day."

To further honor Epperson, the Kachemak Bay Campus Advisory Board started the Mary Epperson Campus Support and Scholarship Fund within the University of Alaska Foundation.
