Film wins award

"Raccoon," a short film produced by AlsoRan Films and based on the writing of Richard Chiappone, creative writing instructor at Kachemak Bay Campus, won the Texas Filmmaker Award at the 35th Annual USA Film Festival. The festival is recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and is able to send its top prize winners to compete for the Oscars, according to Trey Nelson, producer. The film also was selected to attend the Montreal Film Festival in September.

Kenai hosts First Thursday

Several events are scheduled for today in the Kenai and Soldotna area:

  • Reception for "Small Shots," an open exhibition at Kenai Fire Arts Center, 6-8 p.m.

  • Bluegrass jam, Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna, 6:30-9:30 p.m.

  • Sneak preview of "Alaska 2005-Native Arts Now" summer art show at Kenai Visitors Center, 5-7 p.m.

  • Fly tying presentation with Greg Harrington, Already Read Books in Kenai, 6-7 p.m.

    Auditions for Pier One autumn production

    Auditions for William Shakespeare's "King Lear" will be held in the Mariner Theatre at 1 p.m. May 15. Auditions begin Aug. 1, performance is mid-September at Pier One Theatre. There are as many as 30 speaking parts and room for non-speaking performers, backstage help and technical assistants. Handouts for speaking parts are available at Homer Bookstore and Homer Public Library. Auditioners should choose one gender-appropriate selection from the short excerpts on the handout and memorize it to present at auditions. This permits freedom to move about the stage while speaking.

    Workshops scheduled across bay

  • Waterfront watercolor workshop with Paula Dickey, June 3-5

  • Adventure travel writing with Bill Sherwonit, July 29-31

  • Close-up photography with Hal Gage, July 22-23

  • Conceptual landscape painting with Katherine Coons, August 12-14

  • Alaskan wild mushrooms with Chris Riggio, August 26-28

    Museum and heritage center offer joint admission

    The Anchorage Museum of History and Art and the Alaska Native Heritage Center are offering joint admission tickets for $20.75. Tickets allows visitors to enjoy cultural attractions at each facility, with free shuttle bus service between the two locations. The offer is good seven days a week through Sept. 15.

  • Mother's Day brunch, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., May 8
