Betsteroids, you don't need me to suggest way cool things to do this week. Hey, if you can't find something to do, you might as well sink into your La-Z-Boy and become one with the naugahyde. With hundreds of thousands of shorebirds flitting through town, and about as many visitors peerin' at 'em for the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, this town is going to show you a good time. Holy Recreational Opportunities, you might have too many choices. Here, in our sleepy little backwater burg? Imagine that. So take a look at this week's paper and check out all the articles on First Friday and the shorebird events. Do you like squinting through esoteric optics at skittish little birds? You're in the right place but then, duh, you know that. Between birding outings, well, shazam, from the Arts and Crafts Fair to the Wooden Boat Festival, you'll never be bored. Not everything happening this week is an official shorebird festival event, so don't forget some of these Best Bets:

BEST SPECIALIZATION IS FOR INSECTS BET: They don't call them Renaissance Persons for nothin', ya know? We're talking multi-talented geniuses who could slap out a great painting, design a cathedral, compose a sonnet and rig up a kickin' siege engine before breakfast. Want to experience the Renaissance? Check out the Homer High School History Class Renaissance Fair at 11:30 a.m. and at 3:30 p.m. today. Events include a catapult contest, Renaissance food, pottery, art and demonstrations.

BEST HELP YOUR NEIGHBORS BET I: Up in Anchor Point, they're looking after one of their neighbors, Jaque Rich, who has been hospitalized in Anchorage. At 7 p.m. Friday there's a fund-raiser at Chapman School, where the fifth- and sixth-grade basketball team competes against adults. The kids have got game, so don't think the adults have this one wrapped up.

BEST HELP YOUR NEIGHBORS BET II: As we all know, the post office is the center of our cultural universe: the place to gossip with neighbors and old friends, our bulletin board for funeral notices and, oh yeah, a place to get mail. This Saturday it's also collection central for "Stamp Out Hunger," the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service food drive to benefit local communities. Donors can drop off non-perishable food items at post offices or leave in mailboxes before letter carriers arrive.
