Canadian singer-songwriter Cockburn should wow tonight's audience with his wide ranging repertoire of songs. Known for hits like "If I Had a Rocket Launcher," "Wondering Where the Lions Are" and "If A Tree Falls," Cockburn has lately moved into music expressing environmental concerns.
"On the Wing," now in its sixth year, features music and poetry by some of Homer's finest musicians and literary artist. Organized by Sunrise Sjoeberg, the acts and readings focus on birds and spring. Poets include Jeanne Steele, Nancy Levinson, Eva Saulitis, Naomi Klouda, Alexandra Star and Mossy Kilcher. Musicians performing are Sjoeberg, Yelena Marycheva, Marjolein Cardon, Jebarri Dean, Galyna Smith, Liska Kondror, Mariah Stuart, Dick Koskovich and other guests to be announced.
"I try to make a whole painting, where the poems and songs fit together make a whole collage," Sjoeberg said.
This year's concert at Bunnell Street Gallery fortuitously is set with the backdrop of Gina Hollomon's exhibit of clay sculptures, including hanging sculptures of birds.
"For all these years, I've tried to coordinate the art show with the music," Sjoeberg said. "This year, do we ever have the birds. It's the first time we're going to be performing our bird music and poems with eagles, lynx, bears and cranes watching."
Tickets for Bruce Cockburn are $36 and available through the Homer Bookstore or festival headquarters at the Homer Chamber of Commerce. Tickets for "On the Wing" are $10 and available at the chamber or at the door.
