Clean up Day 2008 Winners Homer cleans up

By Ben Stuart
Staff Writer

Homer got a whole lot cleaner on Saturday as 950 bags of trash were brought into the Homer Chamber of Commerce's parking lot during a record-setting Annual Cleanup Day.

This year's total bags surpassed last year's by 83 bags, said coordinator Jenny Martin. Trash was collected from around the Homer area including trails, beaches, empty lots and along the highway. In addition to the normal trash collected, additional items brought in included tires, metal frames, an old smoker and even an old couch.

Of the 948 bags dropped off, 109 bags were brought in by youth, 157 by adults, 400 by groups, 87 by families and 197 bags of recycling.

Prizes were awarded to the top three collectors in each category and 16 hidden prizes were awarded to those who found fluorescent coupons around town.

Youths who brought in a bag of trash also were eligible to win one of four bikes donated by the Kachemak Bay Lions Club. Breanna Torsen, David Jackwoo, Luca Schulz and Katie Dons won the bike drawing.

The Lions also cooked up hot dogs and hamburgers for everyone participating and Pepsi, Fat Olives and Save-U-More donated food for the volunteers.
