Tracksters sprint into new season

By Ben Stuart
Staff Writer

The sprint that is this year's Mariner track and field season got out of the blocks Saturday as seven schools came to town for the Homer Invitational.

Winter-like weather has delayed the start of the season for Homer this year, meaning Saturday's meet was the first of what has become just a four-weekend season.

While the Mariners shook out the kinks finishing fifth in both the boys and girls competitions Anchorage Christian School and Soldotna battled for the team titles.

The SoHi boys beat ACS by just 1.5 points, while the ACS girls beat SoHi by more than 70.

The Mariners got several strong performances, especially from Mike Pate and Tyler Haas. The duo finished second and third in the boys triple jump behind Ryan Scott from ACS.

Pate finished second in the 400 meter with a time of 53.88 seconds and fifth in the 800 meter at 2:20.16.

Haas finished second in the high jump clearing 5-foot, 2 inches, and took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 7 inches.

On the girls side, Reba Temple finished third in the shot put with a 28 foot, 3 inch toss. Anna Duz and Clair Laukitis finished third and fourth in the mile and Brittney Wyatt finished fourth in the girls 300 meter hurdles.

Overall, Mariner Head Coach Mark Casseri said he was happy with how the kids did Saturday.

"I was real pleased with how the kids performed," he said. "They ran hard and it was a halfway decent day."

The track team is a bit smaller than in previous years and competed Saturday with a couple of kids who were battling illnesses, Casseri said.

Now the goal is to get good enough times next week to qualify for the region meet.

The Mariners travel to Skyview for the Borough Meet on Friday and Saturday. Regions is scheduled for the following weekend, also at Skyview. The state meet will be in Fairbanks beginning May 23.
