Mariners pick up wins on road

By Ben Stuart
Staff Writer

The Mariner boys soccer team picked up its first wins of the season over the weekend, before running out of steam in the second half against Wasilla.

The Warriors led just 2-1 at halftime on Saturday, then shifted tactics to run up the score.

"Wasilla kind of figured us out," said Mariner Head Soccer Coach Warren Waldorf. "Once they solved the riddle, they just did the same thing over and over again."

The home team poured in nine goals in the second half to beat Homer 11-1.

"We just signed up for the wrong workshop," Waldorf said. "It was four games in five days. They just ran out of gas."

Sam Satre scored the lone goal for Homer with assists going to David Buckley and Cole Jacobsen.

On Thursday, with fresh legs, the Mariners beat Nikiski 3-2 on goals by Aaron Lewis, Mark Walsworth and Sam Satre.

Homer scored the first two goals before Nikiski tied it up at half time. Waldorf said Homer settled down in the second half to score the winning goal.

"It's a big win for Homer," he said.

On Friday, the Mariners beat Houston 3-1 on goals from Ben Daigle, Satre and Patrick Schneider.

Homer will host its first home soccer games this weekend as Palmer and Colony come to town on Friday and Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Mariners, several of Homer's starters won't be playing as they attend a voice contest - leaving them with 11 varsity players.

Waldorf said he's looking forward to Monday's home game against Skyview when he has a full team that's rested on the field.

"That should be a good game on Monday," he said.
