Bear-resistant containers on sale

The Kachemak Bay Conservation Society has announced that BearSavers, bear-resistant containers used for storing garbage, pet food and other bear attractants, are again on sale at Quick Sanitation (Moore and Moore Services). The office is on the Sterling Highway, about a half mile past the borough landfill. Hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Two sizes are available. The 32-gallon version costs $40; the 68-gallon version costs $50. The 95-gallon size offered last year is sold out. Payment can be by cash, check or credit card. The offer is limited to residents with a 99603 or 99556 zip code. Unlike last year, there no longer is a limit of one per household.

"We have reports from those who bought BearSavers last year that bears were not able to open the container and the bears soon moved on to other options," said George Matz of KBCS. "While bears may still ble in the area, their lack of success in opening the containers should result in less attraction to homes that have garbage or pet food outside."
